Therapy & Our Aging Workforce

August 22, 2019

Take a moment to consider the age of your workforce. We know that the workforce grows older each day—in fact, 1 out of every 4 workers is over the age of 55! Unfortunately with age comes an increased chance for injury, and if those employees sustain a work injury they need individualized, compassionate, and high quality care to help them recover.

Not only do they have physical limitations, but the mental factors weigh heavily for them. They become fearful that they will no longer be able to work or will have to retire in pain and will be unable to do the things they once dreamed of doing during those years.

On average, individuals over 55 lost twice as many days from work as their younger co-workers.

Younger employees injured on the job typically are able to recover more quickly, although due to years of compacted unhealthy lifestyle habits, such as smoking, caffeine intake, and lack of daily exercise or stretching, we are seeing more of a need to address these lifestyle habits during our therapy sessions at all stages of life.

With our aging clients and their slower muscle recovery and joint wear and tear, we take more care to treat appropriately and help companies make the appropriate ergonomic modifications to minimize the stress their bodies endure at work. We cannot stress how important it is to consider all of a person’s health factors when treating them with physical therapy. We highly encourage you to learn more about the BioPsychoSocial approach we use to help work comp clients achieve better outcomes more quickly!

To summarize, Balanced Fitness & Health treats each person individually, starting with where they are when they walk in. We take the time to build rapport and trust with each employee and the company. This leads to better communication and a more efficient and effective recovery. Finally, we take great care to work clients within their physical capabilities and help them overcome the mental aspects of an injury, as well. Each person really matters to us. This isn’t just about getting back to a sport—it’s about people’s lives and livelihoods!
